The schedule changed on Sunday to give my crew the earlier games. The weather did not look promising right from the start – the news was predicting thundershowers in the afternoon. Al Erdmann had the plate for the 11:00 game, and I was down the left field line. This turned into our second one-run game, and was pitched even better than the Connecticut-Rhode Island game. Rhode Island avenged their 1-0 loss to Connecticut by beating Maine 1-0. Both starters went the distance – the Rhode Island pitcher threw a no-hitter with 4 walks and 9 strikeouts. The Maine pitcher gave up a walk and a double in the bottom of the fourth to take the loss – he finished with only that one hit, 3 walks and 7 strikeouts.
The thunderstorms that were predicted did arrive during the 2:00 game – a front came across and just dumped buckets for about half an hour. The grounds crew struggled valiantly trying to get the field ready to play again, but a second line of thunderstorms came through shortly thereafter. With a third front only about two hours away, The Powers That Be determined that they weren’t going to be able to put the field back in shape. The 2:00 game had gone long enough to be official, so that game was called and the subsequent two games rescheduled for the next day.
